Intersections Interlude/Black Magic (prod. by IAMNOBODI)

about

Produced by IAMNOBODI and mixed by Rotoscope Recordings; this record was initially a school assignment to showcase my ability to write music in a way that conveys what I learned in GNDR375 Intersectionality.

I wanted to speak on what Black Joy and Black futures mean to me; my interpretation of how they are displayed within popular storytelling, and ultimately share my own lived experiences.

This record serves as a bridge that connects my debut project, 'Soliloquy: The Mixtape', and my upcoming releases.

lyrics

Most black stories don’t have a happily ever after ending,

which would allow for one to assume that blackness does not have a

future in happily ever after.

But what I think each of these stories are saying is that Black Joy does

exist and Black futures will continue.

We as black people are still here.

We as black queer, trans, or non-binary people are still here.

Black joy is the creation of us, the Diaspora of black people has become

the primary culture for much of western civilization.

While our bodies have been beaten, stolen, killed, chained, and raped,

we are still here.

We are still strong.

We continue to survive.

But we must continue to thrive.

We must continue to protect and educate ourselves and each other.

Black joy is our existence and our future is inevitable.

Black stories depict time of past present and future as an element that is

neither with nor against us but a mere scope.

These stories say that the continuation of black joy and futures will not be

easy or instant, but that giving up or giving in is not an option.

Love and family is deserved and desired by all of us.

Protection and respect is not guaranteed by anyone but ourselves.

We must know who we are in order to be free.

We must educate in order to understand and grow.

We must see the world for what it is

if we want the world to see us for who we are.

Lastly, we must choose to want to see our future.

When we make that choice to see, live in the light and fight, we will win.

When the sun sets and the moon rises, we will still be here.

We will still be here.

(Yeah)

When the sun sets and the moon rises, we will still be here.

(Uh)

I learned that Amerikkka was never meant for me

To find love, be respected, or set myself free

I’m slowly recycling the heartbreak, trauma, and fallacies,

Open their eyes, they need to see we need to breathe.

I’m using my lungs to use my voice; can’t take my speech.

Black boy joy and black girl magic instilled in me

My mind and my heart and my body belong to me.

My ancestry, I’ve become their wildest dream.

Erasing stories, denying our glory as no such thing

Underestimating our power, yet we still succeed

It’s our mothers and women among us, that take the lead,

Protect them with everything, and here, we’ll still be.

We’ll still be here

(We'll still be here)

(Uh)

I saw my shine when I was just a itty bitty boy

my mama told me, that I’ll always be the pretty boy

Blindly showed white men my shine, not foreseeing recoil

But that was then and this is now and I am here telling you

That I'm about to do the shit I've only dreamed to do.

I got my girls, I got my gays, and I got straight guys too.

With God’s protection and Goddess blessing, I bestow on you, my truth.
